San Pedro, A Harbor Gateway to Long Beach and Los Angeles

San Pedro has gone through much revitalization of its downtown areas, creating new lofts and condos out of existing buildings, plus new construction.  Bank Lofts and Centre Street Lofts are two developments that created both new residential and commercial space.

San Pedro is an older residential and port area of the City of Los Angeles. In its earlier days, Los Angeles recognized the importance of having control of the harbor, and made the San Pedro area part of the City in the early 1900s. But San Pedro has long retained its own identity and culture.

This area was part of the original Spanish land grant in the 1700s, and much has changed since then.

Modern San Pedro is home to Fort MacArthur, the Korean Friendship Bell overlooking the blue Pacific,  the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, many schools and churches, and houses built up on the hill sides overlooking the Los Angeles Harbor. It has long been next to Terminal Island, the former Long Beach Naval Station, now the Long Beach Port, and San Pedro was once reached by the ferry coming from Long Beach direction, and replaced by the Vincent Thomas Bridge several decades ago.

Neighborhoods from the 1920's feature many small Spanish bungalow homes. As real estate values rose, many small apartment buildlings and 6-10 unit condo complexes were built. The downtown revitalization projects fostered high-rise office buildings and new and converted loft buildings.

For eligible buyers, first-time buyer programs offered by the City of Los Angeles would be available for some properties here.
