Signal Hill (zip code 90755) is enclosed on a hill, elevated above the surrounding area to give views of Long Beach and Los Angeles Harbors towards the ocean, and the San Gabriel mountains looking inland.
Now an incorporated city, Signal Hill has an interesting history of oil discovery starting in the 1920s. It was once covered with oil derricks which could be seen from many miles away. Some oil sites remain, but the area is now almost all a mix of 1920s houses and modern residential development, business and commercial sites, with fewer open land oil lease sites still in existence. Commercial outlets include large chain stores, restaurants and smaller businesses. The 405 (San Diego Freeway) is within a few minutes drive.
Earlier condo developments occupy some prime view lots--in fact, view protection is part of current city guidelines for residential development.
There are many small and mid-size condo and townhome complexes in Signal Hill, some as small as 4 or 8 units, and up to 30 units. Condominiums were developed there starting in the 1970s and 1980s, prior to the later single family home developments. Monthly homeowner dues may range between $150 in a much smaller complex up to $350 or more.
Larger condominium complexes include Willow Ridge (226 units), which includes gate attendant, interior roadways, guest parking, and pool, clubhouse, gym, and sauna amenities.
Signal Hill's elementary school is administered by the Long Beach Unified School District which is found at the schools link.
